The final stage in tool sharpening should be polishing as this process gives a blade a razor sharp edge. Made from diamond particles suspended in oil, this lapping paste is available in a range of grits from very coarse to very fine. Starting with a coarse grit, apply a small amount of the diamond paste to a flat surface such as an MDF board or a glass sheet. Put the tool edge onto the paste and run the edge through it using long, straight strokes as if using a sharpening stone. This action will spread the paste over the surface as well as sharpening the edge. Repeat this process with a selection of grits, choosing a finer one each time. For best results and to prevent contamination, clean the tool and the glass plate thoroughly between stages. If using MDF, the diamond particles in the compound will embed themselves into the board allowing the board to be re-used, with the same grade paste, many times over and a separate board will be required for each individual grit. To finish, use the High mirror finish paste. Ideal for use after initial sharpening with diamond stones. ©
