Made from aluminium oxide, this man made prep stone releases the surface grit of the finer waterstones creating a slurry on the surface of the stone. It is this slurry that cuts and polishes the edge of the tool. Using a prep stone allows this slurry to be created faster and reduces the time spent sharpening. To use, rub the prep stone evenly over the surface of the wet water stone. Not only will this create the slurry, but it also maintains the flatness of the stone by removing peaks created by previous use. Using a prep stone also means less frequent use of the flattening stone.
