When sharpening, oil stones do not cut as quickly as water stones but they also do not wear as quickly. These man made India stones are manufactured from consistently sized aluminium oxide particles suspended in a hard bonding agent and surface finished to be perfectly flat. Oil stones are porous and require a surface coating of oil to keep the pores of the stone open. This coating also keeps swarf and loose abrasive particles away from the cutting surface of the stone, preventing clogging. As these man-made oil stones tend to absorb oil very quickly, they are pre-packed with oil at the factory. This eliminates the need for soaking the stone before use. These stones are preferred by woodworkers for creating durable, fine cutting edges and are ideal when sharpening to close tolerences. For the best sharpening results, use at least two of the grades of stone in combination, cleaning the tool thoroughly between each different grade to prevent contamination. The coarse stone is ideal for removing nicks, re-shaping or re-establishing an edge, the medium stone will take this basic edge to a very sharp edge and the fine stone is used for the final polishing. Also available are two sizes of combination stones with a coarse grit on one side and a medium grit on the other, ideal for the woodworker on a budget. Each stone measures 8" x 3 x 1" and is supplied in a heavy duty plastic case which also doubles as a sharpening stand.

Name: Barry. Rating: 5/5
This range of oil stones come from a long tradition and they live up to the name NORTON, but more to the point they do the job they are designed for. Sharpening the wider plane blades particularly with the use of the newer honing guides. The width of the stone allows even the wider blades from the No 8 to be sharpened within the stone.
I, like my family before me sharpened blades by hand, the dull blade is a bad tool, doesn't work as intended.
Its all about team work, the blade is sharpened and honed, the blade is set into the tool as intended and then the crafting of wood can begin. Any part missing and the job is only. IT WILL DO!
Stop, you can enjoy it, just sharpen your tools!
