Shorter and narrower than the more common No 4 smoothing plane, the No 3 smoother is the ideal choice for smaller, finer projects. Recently updated this plane features a newly modified body casting making it incredibly positive in use. Other notable improvements are in the lateral adjustment lever design and the addition of a bearing to this, a larger diameter knob on the blade adjuster and a slight shape change to the rear handle to improve ergonomics. Precision machined to exacting tolerances, the wings and sole are flat and square to each other. The bedrock style frog is precisely machined for a perfect fit with the plane body. This ensures that the blade is fully supported along its length and reduces the possibility of chatter making this plane very effective on highly figured hardwoods. The stainless steel cap iron further supports the 3mm thick blade and the precision ground chip breaker gives maximum blade contact. Made from high carbon steel, the 45mm wide blade is tempered and hardened to Rc 60-64 allowing it to be sharpened to and maintain a razor sharp edge. The handle and front knob are produced from solid bubinga. This plane measures 241mm in length and weighs an impressive 1.97kg. ©
10 Year Guarantee - The 10 year guarantee on the plane means that it will be free of any manufacturing defects. If a customer finds any manufacturing related defect, either the product or faulty component will be replaced free of charge.

Fall back in love with hand tools! Finding it hard to justify the expense of the 'heirloom' brands and having to make do with cheap, inaccurate offerings I began relying on power tools in my work. The good reviews here and elsewhere convinced me to take the plunge. This is a superb tool, and I should have bought it earlier! Also bought the no. 5 Jack, which is every bit as good. Fantastic!!

I make jewellery boxes and often found that a no 4 smoother was just that little bit too big for my needs. This no 3 is perfectly sized and produces the most remarkably flat, smooth surface. It's exceptionally well made and I agree that the picture really doesn't do it justice especially as this plane has bubinga handles. A beautiful plane and a joy to use. Recommended.

When I opened the box I had a pleasant surprise. The plane looks MUCH better than in the pictures of this site!
Handles are made of bubinga with a very nice satin finish, not too "heavy".
The blade and chipbreaker are amazingly thick, the overall finish is good, maybe not Veritas-like, but sure nicer than in the pictures.
The sole needed a little flattening to be perfect while the blade was flat, a bit rough, but it is within the process of sharpening in any case.
I honed it at 30° plus a microbevel (optimal for A2 blades like this is), it produces an incredibly smooth surface.
The frog sits well on the body and the blade on the frog... excellent machining and the Bedrock is a joy over the normal construction since it allows setting the blade when still mounted and gives a better support for the blade.
An excellent piece of tool at a bargaign price, highly recommended.
