By compressing the nuisance noise frequencies and amplifying the more useful ones such as human voice frequecies, they allow the wearer to hear conversation or instructions without interruption. The amplified frequencies can be tailored to your level of hearing with a special low level frequency adjuster. Use the volume control to determine how much or how little of the the remaining sound you want to hear. Requires 2 x AA batteries, not included.
