Norton 1000 Grade Water StoneDescription | Customer reviews Norton is the world leader in bench stones and has been since 1823. These American man-made waterstones are renowned for their cutting speed and durability and are increasingly viewed by many to be superior to Japanese waterstones. With an aluminium oxide abrasive captured within a special hard bond, these premium stones wear very slowly and resist gouging when sharpening narrow tools. This minimises the frequency of lapping (flattening) the stone. They produce a surface that is extremely bright and chrome like while putting a legendary edge on cutting tools. The stones measure 8" by 3" by 1" , easily accommodating wide tools such as plane blades. Stones should be fully immersed in water for approxiametly 10 minutes before use and kept wet during sharpening. Each stone is supplied in a heavy duty storage case that has rubber feet to allow for use as a sharpening stand. Available in four grit sizes care must be taken when from moving from coarse stones to finer stones, each tool should be carefully wiped before it is moved up a stage in the sharpening process. Each grit has a specific sharpening use: 220 is used to remove nicks and for first step sharpening of badly dulled tools, the 1000 is used to establish a basic edge, the 4000 to take a shaped edge to a very sharp edge and the 8000 to produce a final polish and remove any scratches. The set of 4 includes 220, 1000, 4000 and 8000 grit stones. Norton water stones have been rated Best Waterstones by the leading American woodworking magazines - Fine Woodworking & Popular Woodworking.
