The heartwood is a vibrant reddish orange when newly cut, but will change over time to a bright red, red or coral-pink with dark streaks. It can continue to darken to a reddish puplish brown or black. The colour fades with age. The grain can range from straight to interlocked, with a find to medium texture and a natural sheen. When newly cut, the sapwood, which is clearly distinguished from the heartwood, is white, and turns to grey or brownish yellow when subjected to light. Specific Gravity: .72.
