You may think that this hatchet cleaver would be more at home in the kitchen than in the garden, but you would be very wrong. This hatchet excels at removing small branches and limbs from trees as well as notching and splitting. The hand forged blade has plenty of heft to it and combined with the ultra sharp cutting edge, there is little that will resist the cutting force of this tool in use. The blade is made up from three layers of steel. The central layer that ultimately forms the cutting edge is blue paper steel, a carbon steel with added elements of tungsten and chromium to make the steel tougher and more durable that a pure carbon steel. This means the blade will stand up to the punishing work it was created for. To further strengthen and support this core, a layer of tougher, slightly softer steel is forge welded on either side. The double bevelled cutting edge is convex ground the keep as much metal and therefore strength in the cutting edge as possible. The thick blade has an integrally forged tang that is anchored deeply in the solid wood handle. This handle is made from Japanese white oak, which is straight grained, dense and and very strong. A satin finish makes the handle smooth whilst offering a secure grip to the user. Supplied with a vinyl covered magnolia wood sheath with belt loop, this hatchet cleaver is an excellent companion when lopping, trimming and cutting back trees and large shrubs. Made in Japan. ©
