This kataba saw has a 120mm blade and universal cutting teeth making it the perfect saw for cutting fine dovetails, tenons and any other cutting task that requires you to cut at an angle to the grain. This saw is hand made by a highly respected Japanese master saw maker whose saws are highly prized by craftsmen from around the world. The blade on this kataba tapers from front to back to reduce friction during cutting and eliminate the risk of binding when taking deep cuts. The teeth are individually hardened, set and sharpened for the sharpest, most durable cutting edge you could possibly ask for. The teeth are hardened at the edges only leaving the middle part of the tooth softer and slightly flexible. This softness gives the tooth the flexibility needed to withstand shocks and jolts, should the saw hit a knot, that would cause lesser hard point teeth to shear off the blade. The teeth are shaped and sharpened to cut on the pull stroke only. By pulling the saw through the wood, the blade is placed under tension keeping it perfectly straightand this means the blade can be much thinner than that of a push cutting saw. The blade is hand hammered to relieve residual stresses in the metal that would cause the blade to twist or warp over time. This process is also used to straighten the blade. As each blade is different, hand hammering is a more precise way of straightening than machine hammering. The blade is mounted into a traditional style magnolia wood handle that is wrapped in rattan for a secure, comfortable non-slip grip. The long straight handle balances perfectly with the blade for precise, fatigue free cutting. A perfect choice for any fine cabinet maker. Made in Japan. ©
This collection of Japanese handsaws are, quite simply, some of the finest saws you could ever possibly own. Crafted from the very finest materials, these saws are hand made by a highly respected Japanese master saw maker who has spent years learning and honing his skills. What makes these saws superior to machine made saws is their performance and this is all due to design features incorporated in to the saw during manufacture. Look closely at the saw blade and you will see that it tapers from the front to the back. As the front is thicker than the back, there is little chance of the saw binding in the wood during cutting. Each tooth is individually hardened at the edges only allowing the softer inner core of the tooth to remain soft and allowing the tooth to withstand the shock of hitting a knot or dense area of wood without breaking off. The blades are hand hammered along their entire length relieving stress and making the blade perfectly straight. All of these factors combine to produce a saw that is exceptionally sharp and stays sharp and will give an ultra fine cut with glass smooth cut surfaces irrespective of the wood being cut.
