Similar in size to a standard No 3 smoothing plane, this low-angle smoother has a bed angle of 12 degrees and a blade bevel angle of 25 degrees giving a combined angle of 37 degrees. The lower working angle makes this the plane of choice when working end grain or exotic timbers as it minimises tearing to the wood fibres. Being smaller and lighter than a No 4 smoother, this plane is easier to handle and proves less fatiguing to use for long periods of time. Used for the final finishing of surfaces, shooting mitres and end grain work, this plane has a narrow 45mm wide, 3mm thick blade making it ideal for smaller, finer work. The ductile cast iron body is precision machined and ground and at the front a movable toe allows you to open and close the mouth of the plane. A stop-screw in the throat offers easily repeatable setting of the mouth and stops damage to the blade by preventing contact between the blade and toe. Setting the blade is both simple and very accurate using the Norris type adjuster. Set screws support the blade on either side preventing it from shifting in use. The front knob and rear handle are bubinga. This plane measures 225mm long, 66mm wide and weighs 1.25kg. Made in Canada. ©
