A low-angle smooth plane has three key uses. It is used to smooth large surfaces, preferably taking a diagonal cut across the grain. Similarly, with its generous side wings, it is ideal for shooting miters. Finally, it is excellent for end-grain work. The low cutting angle of 37° minimizes fibre tearing. With a bed angle of 12°, this is a “bevel-up” plane, like a low-angle block. The 51mm wide A2 tool steel blade is 3mm thick and is both tougher and more wear resistant than a regular carbon steel blade and holds a fine edge longer. The plane’s adjustable mouth can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out or opened for heavier cuts, all done quickly and easily with the front locking knob. The combined feed and lateral adjustment knob makes blade setting easy and accurate. The body, cast from ductile iron, is 250mm x 63mm; overall weight is just over 1.59kg. This low-angle smooth plane can be used as a regular bench plane by using the high-angle blade. ©
When Veritas created their range of woodworking planes they put the emphasis firmly on performance rather than cost. The result is a range of hand planes that are easy to set up and use and give perfect cutting performances. Each plane has a fully stress relieved ductile iron body and a frog that extends all the way to the sole giving unparalled support to the blade for chatter free cutting. A2 steel blades are hard and will take a razor like edge. Finished with bubinga handles these fine planes are ideal additions to any woodworker's plane collection.
