A smoothing plane is used for the final finish on surfaces, especially woods of difficult grain patterns. This plane combines the generous width and weight of a dedicated smoother with the versatile inner workings of a low-angle bevel-up plane. The 12° bed angle, coupled with the 38° blade bevel, yields an effective cutting angle of 50°. The ductile cast iron body is fully stress-relieved and the adjustable mouth can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out or opened for heavier cuts. A stop-screw in the throat adjusts to whatever mouth opening is required and lets you open the mouth fully for blade removal and replacement. The adjustment mechanism, with its combined feed and lateral adjustment knob, makes blade setting easy and accurate. Set screws prevent the blade from shifting, but allow full lateral adjustment. It weighs in at just under 2.26kg, with an exceptionally low centre of gravity. The body has a sole length of 250mm. Includes a 38° blade, 57mm wide, 2mm thick, made of A2 tool steel. ©
When Veritas created their range of woodworking planes they put the emphasis firmly on performance rather than cost. The result is a range of hand planes that are easy to set up and use and give perfect cutting performances. Each plane has a fully stress relieved ductile iron body and a frog that extends all the way to the sole giving unparalled support to the blade for chatter free cutting. A2 steel blades are hard and will take a razor like edge. Finished with bubinga handles these fine planes are ideal additions to any woodworker's plane collection.

Name: Paul. Rating: 5/5
This is quite simply the best smoothing plane I have ever owned - and that incudes a Lie Nielsen bronze No 4 with Karl Holtey iron, and a variety of vintage infills. The performance on Indian Rosewood guitar backs & sides is amazing - no tearout even against the grain, and a finish only marginally short of a cabinet scraper. The Veritas blade is a revelation - the first genuinely flat back to a plane iron I have ever come across - Holtey & LN included. No further honing required - it is FLAT. The adjustable mouth makes far more sense to me than an adjustable frog and the bevel up design seems to me to be the way forward for smoothers. This plane is excellent value for money with only one very minor downside - you can't use it on its side.
