The blade is hand forged from Swedish 12C27 stainless steel, a premium steel used solely for items such as knives due it is exceptional edge holding properties and strength. The spring locking mechanism holds the blade securely in position when unfolded. Forged from a single piece of steel rather than welded together like on lower quality versions, the catch and spring are hand finished and the blade, bolster, spring and catch have a smooth, matt finish. The catch is shaped like a bee which was used by Napoleon as his imperial emblem and awarded to the Auvergne region of France in which these knives are made. The handle is made from first quality snake wood meaning the wood is highly figured making an interesting and attractive handle. Solid steel bolsters give the handle additional strength and an inlaid shepherd's cross further hints at the history of the Laguiole knife. The company making these knives has been producing some of France’s finest cutlery since the early 1920s. Based in Thiers, which is the French equivalent of Sheffield in England or Solingen in Germany, the manufacturer is situated at the very heart France’s cutlery manufacturing centre. Using only the very finest materials to create their knives, each knife blade is forged from premium Swedish stainless steel and feature native and exotic hardwoods and well as buffalo horn for their handles. Rather than a brand name, the Laguiole is a style of knife that originated in the French village that bears the same name. Easily recognisable by its characteristic slender blade and slim handle, the Laguiole knife is elegant in its form but is reliable and practical in its use.
