Traditionally every person, adult and child, would carry one of these pocket knives. Known as higonokami, this knife is used for carving and whittling as well as for other domestic cutting tasks. The blade is curved like a samurai sword and pays homage to the days of the highly respected warrior whose image the knife handle bears. Today, these pocket knives are made by master blacksmiths who have spent years learning their craft and acquiring skills that have been handed down through the generations from the time of the samurai swords makers. Each blade is imbued with this knowledge making it strong, light and exceptionally sharp and this knife is no exception. The blade has a core of blue paper steel, a high carbon steel with added tungsten and chromium to make it tough and durable. Its hardness and grain structure gives it the ability to hone to a razor like edge. Multiple layers of softer iron are forged over the top of this steel to give it support and protect it from accidental knocks and bumps that could cause damage to the steel. The forging and grinding processes the blade goes through exposes the different layers of metal giving it a beautiful Damascus steel patterning. This blade is mounted on a copper effect brass handle into which the blade completely folds when not in use. A simple thumb tab makes opening and closing the knife smooth and effortless. This is a very handy pocket knife for use around the home or workshop and is like having your very own miniature samurai sword! Comes presented in a kiriwood box. Made in Japan. ©
