This traditional Japanese hunting knife is the work of a true craftsman and is made to give you years of unparalleled service out in the field or anywhere else you care to use it. The blade is hand forged and consists of 11 layers of metal; a central white paper steel core with five layers of a softer iron on either side. White paper steel is made from carbon and a high purity iron ore resulting in a very fine carbon steel that will harden to a higher degree than other steels and will also hone to a much sharper edge. As the steel and therefore cutting edge are so hard, the knife will not dull easily even when used in heavy cutting tasks. Around this core, ten layers of softer iron are forge welded, five on either side, and this gives extra strength and support to the central core. Displaying the very beautiful suminagashi patterning, this blade is hand ground and finished and bears the engraved signature of its maker. The 135mm blade is forged in a single piece with its tang to give an inner strength to the knife. This tang runs deep into the knife handle, making the handle and blade as one. A finger guard style ferrule sits at the top of the handle and prevents fingers from slipping on to the ultra sharp blade. Made from solid oak, the handle has a form that feels very natural in the hand. The handle is wrapped in ray skin, a tough, durable leather that has a slightly abrasive surface. This surface ensures that you have a secure, non-slip grip even in the wet. The handle is finished with layers of urushi varnish making it resistant to water, solvents, acids, alkali, heat and just about everything else it could contact. For safe storage, this knife is supplied with a magnolia wood and leather sheath that can be belt mounted keeping it to hand when you need it. Made in Japan. ©
Saji is a name synonymous with the very best knives Japan has to offer. A highly regarded craftsman, Takeshi Saji has been honoured by his native Japan many times and has even been declared a national treasure for the unparalleled quality of his work. Born in 1948 in to a blacksmithing family, Saji was apprenticed to a master knife maker at the age of 14. From the very beginning of his apprenticeship it was obvious that Saji had a natural talent for his craft. Originating and still living in Takefu, Saji is at the very heart of traditional and cultural centre of Japan's hammer forged knife industry. Takefu itself has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its blades. Its knife manufacturing history dates back over 700 years and is in an area famed for its exceptionally pure quality iron ore. Each knife Saji produces is a work of art that is made to be used. The sheer quality of his knives will ensure they last and continue to work hard for their owner for years to come. Beautiful heirloom quality knives.
