To call this a utility knife would be doing it a great injustice. Admittedly, this is a general purpose knife and to that end the name does suit but when you examine the knife and appreciate the sheer quality of the craftsmanship that went in to making it, then it becomes so much more than a simple utility knife. Made by Saji, an internationally recognised master blacksmith, this knife will perform flawlessly in any task you ask of it. The hand forged blade is created to be strong and ultra sharp and features 11 layers of metal. At the very heart of the blade, the white paper steel core is both very hard and fine in structure and offers a cutting edge that will hone to a razor sharpness and will stay sharp much longer than other steels. White paper steel is made from a very pure iron ore and carbon with nothing else added. This purity allows the steel to be hardened to a far higher degree than other types of steel. Around this core, five layers of softer iron are forge welded to either side. This adds strength to the blade and protects the steel core from knocks and shocks that may otherwise cause damage to it. The different layers give the blade its distinctive Damascus steel pattern and each blade is unique. The blade is hand finished and etched with the signature of the craftsman who made it. Forged in a single piece for greater strength, the blade features a long tang which anchors it firmly in the knife handle. This knife has a solid dark wood handle with a simple varnished finish. A steel bolster and pommel give additional strength to the handle and make the knife feel perfectly balanced in use. With its 110mm blade, this knife is a useful size for home, workshop or garden. Supplied with a leather sheath. Made in Japan. ©
Saji is a name synonymous with the very best knives Japan has to offer. A highly regarded craftsman, Takeshi Saji has been honoured by his native Japan many times and has even been declared a national treasure for the unparalleled quality of his work. Born in 1948 in to a blacksmithing family, Saji was apprenticed to a master knife maker at the age of 14. From the very beginning of his apprenticeship it was obvious that Saji had a natural talent for his craft. Originating and still living in Takefu, Saji is at the very heart of traditional and cultural centre of Japan's hammer forged knife industry. Takefu itself has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its blades. Its knife manufacturing history dates back over 700 years and is in an area famed for its exceptionally pure quality iron ore. Each knife Saji produces is a work of art that is made to be used. The sheer quality of his knives will ensure they last and continue to work hard for their owner for years to come. Beautiful heirloom quality knives.
