Rutlands    Part No. DK7228

• Smooth running 500 watt high torque induction motor
• 9 x spindle speeds from 400rpm to 2500rpm
• Precision quill with the spindle running in sealed for life ball bearings
• 50mm of chuck travel allowing for deep drilling
• Precision machined cast iron headstock, table and base
• 3mm to 16mm capacity geared chuck
• Weighs over 21kg

Powered by a 500 watt, high torque induction motor this bench drill has 9 pulley driven spindle speeds ranging from 400 to 2500rpm. The belt cover is fitted with a micro switch which prevents the drill form running if the cover is opened. The main headstock is precision machined from cast iron and features a highly accurate quill and spindle assembly to ensure precise, consistent drilling of metals, woods and plastics. The specially selected drive belt results in low noise and extremely low levels of vibration. The main spindle has 50mm of travel and is fitted with a precision three jaw chuck which accepts shank diameters from 3mm to 16mm.

Both the table and base are machined from cast iron and feature machined slots to accept drill press vices. The table tilts through 45 degrees for drilling at angles and can be swung out of the way to allow for workpieces up to 330mm tall to be placed between the base and the chuck. Standing 610mm tall and weighing over 21kg this is a very solid, very precise bench drill that is designed for professional workshop use.

Very good, quiet running bench drill but i've knocked off one star as I paid £120 and now Rutlands are offering at £100.

When it first arrived I could not open the pulley cover to tension the belt. Spent half an hour trying without success. I phoned Rutlands and they told me to rotate the locking knob and then pull the knob sharply outwards. There is a safety switch in the headstock that prevents you from operating the drill with the pulley cover open. I wish I had read the instructions as I then made another call to Rutlands to say it would not switch on! Now it works a treat.

Arrives flat packed so you have to assemble the headstock to the main column, table and base casting. Once assembled I spent some time fine tuning the belt tension. There is no slop between the main quill and the casting which=h is the most important aspect. Motor delivers enough power for my use - so far 20mm forstner bit into maple without any signs of stalling. Just don't try and move the bit too quickly and you will get a very clean hols. Overall I am pleased and would recommend. English instruction manual leaves something to be desired though.

I looked at a number of drill presses before deciding on this machine. There appears to be a multitude of brands priced below £100. Some were appalling - you could actually hold the main spindle and move it side to side. This is the best I could find for the price. The motor runs smoothly and quietly and there is minimal play on the main spindle. In fact I used a 2mm brad bit drilling into oak and the hole with inline. The finishing on the castings is very good and there are no rough edges. So far very pleased with my purchase.
