Hunting Knife with Veneered Handle - 150mm

Rutlands    Part No. JP1233
Hand crafted by a genuine, Japanese master craftsman, this hunting knife is not only a tool to be appreciated but also one that should be used. This knife will give you a lifetime of unparalleled service and will achieve any task you ask of it without struggle or question. Each knife that Saji produces is steeped in a very rich and noble history and this is reflected in the sheer quality of the knives he makes and this one is no exception.

The beautiful 150mm Damascus steel blade is made up of 11 layers of metal. A single core layer of white paper steel forms the cutting edge of the blade. White paper steel is a carbon steel that is made from a very pure iron ore with carbon added to it and nothing else. This purity allows the steel to be hardened to a far higher degree than almost any other steel.

Fine in structure, this steel can then be honed to an ultra sharp razor like edge that does not dull or blunt easily. To protect this very hard centre, layers of softer iron are layered on both sides of the blade. These layers act like shock absorbers and protect the core from impacts and knocks that could otherwise cause the white paper steel to chip or crack.

The blade is forged with an integral tang making the knife much stronger than low cost knives that have the tangs welded to them. this tang nestles deeply in the solid wood handle giving the whole knife a feeling of innate strength. The blade and handle as supported by a hammer forged ferrule with integral finger guard. This prevents you fingers from contacting the blade should you hand slip during heavy use.

Than handle is made from solid wood, features polished wood veneer overlays and is gently shaped to fit the contours of your hand. This knife is supplied with a polished wooden sheath to protect the blade when not in use but to also allow you to carry the knife with you on a belt. A stunning knife and one with many uses at home or in the field. Made in Japan.

Saji is a name synonymous with the very best knives Japan has to offer. A highly regarded craftsman, Takeshi Saji has been honoured by his native Japan many times and has even been declared a national treasure for the unparalleled quality of his work. Born in 1948 in to a blacksmithing family, Saji was apprenticed to a master knife maker at the age of 14.

From the very beginning of his apprenticeship it was obvious that Saji had a natural talent for his craft. Originating and still living in Takefu, Saji is at the very heart of traditional and cultural centre of Japan's hammer forged knife industry. Takefu itself has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its blades. Its knife manufacturing history dates back over 700 years and is in an area famed for its exceptionally pure quality iron ore.

Each knife Saji produces is a work of art that is made to be used. The sheer quality of his knives will ensure they last and continue to work hard for their owner for years to come.
