Based in China, Qiangsheng Luban are experts in their field of hand plane manufacture. Using a combination of traditional and modern manufacturing processes along with tried and trusted designs, they produce planes that offer exceptional quality. Since their arrival in 2005 they have established themselves as the serious alternative to the premium plane brands from North America. Their attention to detail in the finishing process is in our opinion second to none and the weight and balance ratio is of the highest level. Qiangsheng Luban planes are an exceptionally popular choice with discerning woodworkers and cabinetmakers throughout the world.

Shorter and narrower than the more common No 4 smoothing plane, the No 3 smoother is the ideal choice for smaller, finer projects. Precision machined to exacting tolerances, the wings and sole are flat and square to each other. The bedrock style frog is precisely machined for a perfect fit with the plane body. This ensures that the blade is fully supported along its length and reduces the possibility of chatter making this plane very effective on highly figured hardwoods.

The stainless steel cap iron further supports the 3mm thick blade and the precision ground chip breaker gives maximum blade contact. Made from high carbon steel, the 45mm wide blade is tempered and hardened to Rc 60-64 allowing it to be sharpened to and maintain a razor sharp edge. The handle and front knob are produced from solid bubinga. This plane measures 241mm in length and weighs an impressive 1.97kg.

For the money it can't be beat, although don't expect it to come perfect and ready to use. The sole was very close to perfectly flat and didn't take long to finish, however the sides aren't quite square to the sole (can't say whether quangsheng intended for them to be). The handles are nice, although the finish is a bit crude (may refinish them at some point). The bedrock frog works nicely, and all the critical areas appear to be flat/ level. The blade is nice steel and sharpens well, although the edge wasn't ground straight, and the sides aren't quite parallel. I'd recommend flattening the underside of the front of the chip breaker, and polishing the top, and also removing the grinding marks from the underside of the lever cap, which will make the depth adjustment smoother. Only real niggle (apart from the sides) is that the screw hole on the lever cap could have been countersunk, as sometimes the lever cap slides back when reducing the depth of the blade.

This plane represents extremely good value, especially at its offer price. Whilst the finish may not be of the standard of other planes at more than double the price its perfectly acceptable if like me you make practical use of your tools rather than just look at them. I spent about an hour honing the blade to a razor finish and flattening the sole neither of which were any worse than considerably more expensive planes I have in my workshop. A few final adjustments and I was able to take the finest shavings off of a variety of hardwoods. A very useful addition to my collection. Highly recommended.

Fall back in love with hand tools! Finding it hard to justify the expense of the 'heirloom' brands and having to make do with cheap, inaccurate offerings I began relying on power tools in my work. The good reviews here and elsewhere convinced me to take the plunge. This is a superb tool, and I should have bought it earlier! Also bought the no. 5 Jack, which is every bit as good. Fantastic!!

I make jewellery boxes and often found that a no 4 smoother was just that little bit too big for my needs. This no 3 is perfectly sized and produces the most remarkably flat, smooth surface. It's exceptionally well made and I agree that the picture really doesn't do it justice especially as this plane has bubinga handles. A beautiful plane and a joy to use. Recommended.

When I opened the box I had a pleasant surprise. The plane looks MUCH better than in the pictures of this site! Handles are made of bubinga with a very nice satin finish, not too 'heavy'. The blade and chipbreaker are amazingly thick, the overall finish is good, maybe not Veritas-like, but sure nicer than in the pictures. The sole needed a little flattening to be perfect while the blade was flat, a bit rough, but it is within the process of sharpening in any case. I honed it at 30 plus a microbevel (optimal for A2 blades like this is), it produces an incredibly smooth surface. The frog sits well on the body and the blade on the frog... excellent machining and the Bedrock is a joy over the normal construction since it allows setting the blade when still mounted and gives a better support for the blade. An excellent piece of tool at a bargaign price, highly recommended.
