Product Details

The world's finest Japanese saws made by Gyokucho Razorsaw and favoured by professional cabinet makers, joiners and home woodworkers. Japanese handsaws have one stand out difference from their western counterparts; they cut on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke. Due to this single fundamental difference, Japanese saws have blades that are thinner, lighter and cut much smoother and faster. As the action of pulling the saw keeps the blade in tension through the cut, the blade does not need to be as thick or as heavy as a push saw which requires the extra bulk to withstand the compressive force of the cut keeping the blade, and the resultant cut, straight. An ideal addition to any tool box, this set of three compact saws comprises Dozuki and Kataba saws, both capable of starting and making mid panel cuts and a Ryoba saw. Ideal for all types of woodwork especially trim and carpentry applications, these saws are easy to use and produce a fine finish. These compact saws have soft grip handles.

The Dozuki Panel Compact saw features a curved toe allowing it to begin cuts in the middle of a panel. This curve features non set, rip teeth rather than the crosscut teeth that make up the rest of the blade length. This saw excels at cutting very hard or abrasive materials such as plywood, plastic laminates and hardboard.

The Ryoba Compact is a double edge saw with two tooth patterns, one for cross cutting and the other for cutting with the grain on hard and softwoods. It features impulse hardened teeth that are successively finer from tip to tang for easy starting cuts.

The Kataba Compact saw has a slightly thicker blade without a spine making it ideal for long and deep cuts. The perfect combination of fine, flexible blade and large cut depth make it an extremely versatile saw, capable of cutting hard and softwood and composite materials leaving a clean feather free finish to the cut surfaces. The toe of the blade is curved and has rip teeth rather than crosscut ones. The combination of curve and rip teeth with no set allows this saw to start a cut mid panel as well as at the edge.

The design of the Japanese saws or "Noko Giri" differs greatly from the more familiar western style saws. The Japanese put great emphasis on balance in all areas of their life and their woodworking tools are no exception. Look at the shape and form of a Japanese saw and the handle is in perfect visual balance with the blade. Hold the same saw in your hand and you realise that the balance of the tool is not purely cosmetic. This makes the tool easier and more efficient to use and has a profound effect on your work.

John Kenney

An excellent set of saws, the curved toes on the Kataba and Dozuki are particularly useful as I do much cut out work. Beautifully sharp and I really like the softer handles. These have proved to be an invaluable addition to my saw collection.

I'd never used a japanese saw before but once I got the hang of it, these are marvelous to use. Fast and unbelievably smooth cut. I'd recommend the dozuki for for trim work.

Charles Morland

Excellent set is saws. I needed to replace an old and well used dovetail saw and decided to give these a try. Really pleased with them. Fast effortless cutting and leave a very smooth finish. Only negative point is the lack of a hanging hole in either handle or blade. To get over this I bought the storage/carry bag. It offers good protection but is more fiddly than being able to just hang them up.

Neville Imray

A set of replacement blades (JP2119 dozuki, JP 2122 ryobi and JP 2123) costs £ 47.85) but 2 of 3 are out of stock so I bought another full set. I'm accumulating spare handles instead of spare blades!

Journeyman

By no means an essential tool box item, but these saws posess all the advantages of any pull saw but in minature. Furniture making and repair, trimming, small joints, hard to reach places or just a handy accessory to keep in the van, for those jobs where nothing else will do.
