Product Details

Unlike any other file or rasp on the market, these carving files leave a smooth, fine surface, are incredibly fast cutting and require little pressure in use. Rather than having individual teeth set along the length and width of the blade, these files have chemically etched ridges rather than teeth that act more like tiny plane blades. This means that rather than scratching material away from the surface creating dust, each cut produces minute shavings instead. This results in a far smoother surface that looks more like it has been planed to shape instead of filed. Cut into the ridges are regularly spaced grooves that run in a diagonal pattern to assist with waste removal and act like chip breakers preventing the file from clogging. These files can be used for initial shaping work and also for fine tuning as each file has safe edges that will not scratch or dig into the adjacent surfaces. Available in flat or half round, these extremely fine single sided files are used for finishing work and feature handles with a rubberised grip.

These carving files are the best we have ever tried and from the outset proved themselves worthy of the excellent reputation they hold worldwide. Requiring very little pressure from the user, these files cut very quickly and leave a clean, smooth surface in their wake. Look closely at the surface of one of these files and the reason for this soon becomes apparent. Each blade is made up of a series of chemically etched ridges rather than individual teeth. Grooves are cut at regular intervals along each ridge to form a diagonal pattern that runs the length of the blade. This combination of ridges and grooves makes the surface of the file act like it is made up of hundreds of tiny blades that plane the surface of the wood instead of scratch it away. The resultant finish is astounding.

I''ve not yet found a wood that this little file will not leave a smooth finish on. I''ve even had it shaping lignum vitae as if it were sycamore. Marvellous! I will be buying more of these as and when I have an excuse.

Easy to use and gives good results with little effort. A bit pricey for my liking but you do get a high quality file. Not sure how you''d go about sharpening it though.
