Product Details

Founded in 1922 in Connecticut, USA, Foredom is the leading authority in the design and manufacture of flexible shaft machines. Foredom manufacture this chisel carving machine specifically for Rutlands with a 230V motor and variable speed control unit to ensure optimum torque and power performance for UK electrics.

The kit contains everything you need for power carving including a flexible shaft, motor, hammer action handpiece, speed control unit and 17 high speed steel carving chisels. The permanent magnet motor is specifically designed for high torque, low speed applications, offering more power when carving and removing stock. The motor should be run between 0 and 5000rpm allowing the hammer action handpiece to power the carving chisel back and forth at maximum torque. You simply guide the chisel in whichever direction you want and let the torque and power of the motor do the rest.

The variable speed allows for precise and controlled carving from the initial roughing out through to adding intricate work such as letters, drawing lines, and accentuation. The 90cm long ultra-flexible shaft allows the woodcarver to reach around the workpiece and to access tight spaces.

Supplied with the kit are 17 high speed steel carving chisels, each with a varying profile including straight gouge, V parting, bevel, double bevel, flat, sweep, fishtail and more. The chisels are sharpened ready for use and can be fully sharpened and honed when required using a traditional stone. The kit includes hang up 230V motor, 90cm flexible shaft, bench mounted infinitely variable speed control unit, hammer action aluminium handpiece, 17 carving chisels, machine lubricant for the shaft and full operational instructions. This is the ultimate premium performance power carver on the market. Available as an optional extra are a motor hanger and a fully rotational handpiece.

The original and still the best!!!!!

I previously owned a Dremel and Weecher flexishaft carver as I could not justify Foredom's prices. I should have bitten the bullet the first time around as this machine is simply in a different class from any other carver. It is made in America and it shows. The build quality is excellent and has withstood some heavy roughing out over the past 12 months. Make sure you occasionally lube up the shaft as the internals can seize up if left in a condensation ridden workshop. 10 out of 10

I originally ordered this kit from Amazon only to find out that the electrics were 110v for the North American market. I paid a bit extra via Rutlands for the correct 230v version but at least I can use it and it comes with a full manufacturers warranty. The motor is very sweet running, it purrs under load and shows now sign of stress. Make sure you don't curve the shaft at too acute an angle or you will end up damaging the inner steel core. I have tried it out on a number of wood species from soft lime to hard Bubinga. Provided that you go with the grain it performs superbly. I expected nothing less as Foredom are known to be the best. Excellent choice for any home or serious carver.

Oh wow! I was recommend this system by the instructor at my cabinet making course for relief carving. I work mainly on English oak and this unit has finite settings that allow you to control the reciprocating speed to suit type of carving you are producing. For fine detail work it is excellent. The hand piece is compact and comfortable to grip either in the palm of the hand or in a pencil hold grip for delicate carving. The blades are pre honed ready for use and appear to hold their edge as long as my Pfeil hand chisels. I am delighted with my purchase, it can rough out, shape and add fine detail work with one tool and as the motor is doing the work I can focus on controlling the cut.
