Product Details

Based on a turn of the century design, these chisels are specifically designed for timber frame and log builders. Machine forged from highest quality German chrome vanadium steel, these blades have a high grain compression making them extremely durable and highly resistant to metal fatigue. Tempered and hardened to Rc-61, these chisels will take and retain a razor sharp edge. Primarily designed for heavy duty cutting such as large mortise and tenon joints, these chisels are also useful for creating dovetails in timberwork. To make heavy duty cutting easier, the cutting edge is slightly curved. The blades have sockets at the end into which the handles are fitted. This method was extremely popular because, should the handle break or split, it was easy to attach a new handle.

Made from solid seasoned ash, popular with tool makers for its strength and beauty, the handles are strong and hardwearing and feature a steel reinforcement ring at the top to prevent spreading or splitting when struck with a mallet. Available in 2" these chisels have a blade length of 7" and an overall length of 18".

Made entirely in Germany from the highest quality materials, MHG chisels come from the centuries old traditions of fine tool making but are produced using the very latest forging and hardening processes. This gives a chisel that is extremely efficient and incredibly reliable. The blades are premium quality German chrome vanadium; a metal that has a much higher resistance to metal fatigue than other tool steels and is perfect for tools that are designed to be struck with a mallet. Each blade is tempered and hardened to RC-61 along its entire length, giving a blade that will take and hold a razor sharp edge as well at the end of its working life as it did when new.

The handles are made from slow growing European hardwoods selected for their straight grain and strength. Supported by a steel band, the handles will not spread or split in use and offer exceptional support to the deep seated tangs. Precision ground and sharpened before they leave the factory, MHG chisels are built for hard work and perform flawlessly.
