Product Details

Comprising of six bevel edge chisels, this set of professional tools comes in a fitted wooden box. Each blade is forged in Germany from the highest quality German produced chrome vanadium, hardened to Rc-61 along its entire length and polished to a mirror finish. Although, due to their hardness, these chisels will take a little longer to hone to a razor sharp edge, the edges will stay sharper for longer and the whole length of the blade can be used.

The long, integral tangs seat the blades firmly in the handles which are turned from European hornbeam. Hornbeam is favoured for its straight grain and hardwearing nature which gives the handles durability. The handles are supported by steel reinforcing bands at both the top and bottom of the handles to prevent them splitting or spreading when struck with a mallet. This set comprises six chisels: 6mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm and 26mm. Overall lengths range from 244mm to 300mm.

Made entirely in Germany from the highest quality materials, MHG chisels come from the centuries old traditions of fine tool making but are produced using the very latest forging and hardening processes. This gives a chisel that is extremely efficient and incredibly reliable. The blades are premium quality German chrome vanadium; a metal that has a much higher resistance to metal fatigue than other tool steels and is perfect for tools that are designed to be struck with a mallet. Each blade is tempered and hardened to RC-61 along its entire length, giving a blade that will take and hold a razor sharp edge as well at the end of its working life as it did when new.

The handles are made from slow growing European hardwoods selected for their straight grain and strength. Supported by a steel band, the handles will not spread or split in use and offer exceptional support to the deep seated tangs. Precision ground and sharpened before they leave the factory, MHG chisels are built for hard work and perform flawlessly.

The first mention must be the amazingly quick delivery by Rutlands. Ordered on a Friday (yesterday) at 3:45pm and arrived at 12:45 the next day - on a Saturday. So Brownie points there. I wanted a reasonable set of chisels that would be as multi-purpose as possible and these looked like a good bet. I got them at the sale price and with a further 10% off (although there was delivery charge but worth paying re see above) and for the money they're brilliant value. The blades themselves are nice quality, nice and flat and well polished, and the steel seems nice and hard and has taken a good edge. How long they hold an edge remains to be seen, but I have no reason to doubt the other reviews thus far. The compromise is clearly the handles - there's evidence of some cost cutting here, but they're completely functional and comfortable enough in the hand. The ferrules seem to be fairly substantial and the handles inspire enough confidence not to worry about giving them a whack, but most of my work will be paring so it's not a real concern for me. I've given four stars only because even at this price point I think the handles could be better finished, but the money's in the blade and that's all good and they do represent brilliant value. Thumbs up Rutlands!

I have exotic chisels that cost an arm and a leg, classic English chisels from Sorby and Iles, and a £7.99 Aldi set as well. To be honest, once they're flattened and sharpened I can't see very much difference between any of them performance-wise even for cabinet making. So I had no hesitation in ordering this set for site work. Once fettled, they're excellent. A great buy.

After reading the reviews, I thought for the price you can't go wrong.

The pros:
Nice box
Blade protectors supplied
Once honed these do sharpen to a fine edge

The cons;
I have to agree with Mr Green, the blades out of the box did not have crisp corners along the length of the steel and the backs were far too hollowed - right up to the blade edge. Unless you have a tormek or similar expect several hours of honing. And since the side edges are quite rounded - as you resharpen these chisels it will continue to be an irritation.

The primary bevels are about 22.5 degrees and were only rough honed. It probably doesn't matter so much in use, but if you are used to using a sharpening jig you will have to remember a different setting for these tools.

The handles do not appear to have any finish on them which means that after those several hours of honing the handles will invariably be somewhat soiled. I would suggest a quick coat of oil before you start sharpening.

Having said that - once you put in the work these do appear to hold a good edge.

Ben Green

Although they look great, I found them to be overly rounded which meant it took a lot of work to get the backs flattened. Two of them were also quite convex, again, taking a long time to get flat, but for the price, you can't go wrong, fantastic product!

I am a carpenter for the last 46 years. I can honesty say that these are the finest western chislels I have ever used.

A very good set of chisels to use and look at,pretty sharp out the box but with a little honing ,able to take and keep a very sharp edge.Particularly good feature is that the sides of the whole length of the blades are machined and polished to take off the 'sharp' edge which other brands fail to do which makes for uncomfortable chiseling and paring when holding the sides of the blade.Very tactile wooden handles and well balanced.Good storage box.

I thought I had a set of nice, sharp chisels (Irwin Marples), they are quite heafty so decided on a lighter set too. These are beautiful, you can't help polishing them the chrome vanadium is so seductive! Straight out the box they weren't as sharp as my Irwins but a brief go on my diamond stone and a little hone they came up SHARP. Sharper than I thought was sharpeningly possible!
Have yet to see if they retain that edge longer but just how sharp they come up is enough for me to be happy

Ben Foster

Fantastic set of chisels.

If you like your tools to look great then these are the chisels for you. I tend to still reach for my marples as the hassle of getting these out of the box and running the risk of damaging the perfect hornbeam handles make me less inclined to use them!!

Only draw back to these chisels is it took a lot of flattening to get the backs right. The chrome vandium is great for geeping an edge and it hones really nicely, but that initial set up took a long time.

David Thompson

I bought these chisels recently and mostly agree with some of the comments made. However, to gain the maximum sharpness from them the backs do need flattening, several of mine are quite uneven near the blade and honing using a fine waterstone or similar. they are also quite thick which may cause issues with fine dovetail work. For the price a nice set.

I got this set free when I ordered the DK2700 workbench. Best freebie I have ever had. These are top quality, I am overwhelmed that I didn't have to pay for them

Jon Place

After buying these chisels, I now understand the difference between standard and quality steel. These tools sharpen up to a razor finish with very little effort and seem to hold their edge for quite a while. They a nice and light so you can keep working with them for quite some time and they are beautifully balanced. A joy to work with.

Steve Rogers

These are fantastic, I am currently on a cabinetmaking course, I just retouched the honing using a Japanese waterstone, wow are the sharp and they keep their edge for ages,Now the whole group are going to get them. Well done for sourcing such a great product. 10 out of 10

Jered Allcock

This is a fantastic set of chisels, I would thoroughly recommend them. The metal is Chrome-vanadium steel, which doesn't rust or oxidize over time. This is also a benefit because it can be polished to a mirror finish when sharpening and can hold their edge for longer than normal chisels. They are very well balanced and feel good to hold. They come in a very nice beech box with a spacer to stop them from knocking around and damaging each other. They also have blade guards to maintain their edge. If you're looking to upgrade your current chisels buy these, you won't be disappointed.

John D

The photograph does not do justice to these chisels, they are 10/10, even the display box is superb. The polish and finish of these chisels is so good you can use them straight out of the box.

Robert Law

The finish on these chisels is impressive. They are already honed and sharpened so you can use them straight from the box.
