Product Details

Wheel marking gauges are widely recognised as being much more accurate than their pinned counterparts. Unlike pin marking gauges, where the pin tends to wander with the grain of the wood, this marking gauge with its bevelled wheel rides across the grain for perfectly straight hair line marking; ideal when working with coarse or open grained woods. The marking wheel is made from hardened steel which is sharpened to score perfectly straight lines exactly where you need them. For even greater accuracy, the solid brass head features a knurled brass lock for precise grip and cutter positioning. The brass head is finely machined and has a non marring shoe. Maximum capacity 6" / 150mm.

A nice gauge and excellent value as a bogof, but needs some fettling as noted by earlier reviewers. My particular beef is that the wheel doesn't go round, so it acts more like a conventional pin gauge, being dragged through the wood. The reason is that there is no standoff so the screw clamps the wheel hard against the body. My solution was to measure the depth of the screw hole (using the end of a bit of wire) subtract the length of the screw shank and then cut off a section from a 1.5" nail slightly oversize. Slid this into the hole first and then tightened the screw down on top of it. That left the wheel loose so, by carefully grinding the end of the nail spacer and retesting, I was able to get a snug fit. Be warned though if you try this - make sure that the nail is a loose fit in the hole because you'll have an interesting time getting it out if it sticks!

I am very pleased with this new marking gauge. The brass locking nut holds the head rigidly in position, which was a problem I incurred with my more expensive Veritas version. The blade is very sharp and leaves a fine and parallel line. I never trust graduated etchings so I always size with a rule. Exceptional tool for the price and I would recommend to any fellow woodworker.

You can never have enough laying out tools so the BOGOF offer was too good to miss.
As ever Rutland'sRutland's delivery service was excellent and my gauges arrived on the next working day.
I have to say that on the opening the package I was a little disappointed the over all finish of the gauges was OK but they looked and felt as if the final polishing had not been, also the printing of the graduations was rather "wooley". This was fixed with a quick rub down with 0000 wire wool and some black ink rub into the etchings.
That said these are a good quality tool, the fit of the stock to the fence is good and square, the lock nut is easy to hold and locks securely onto the stock. The wheel is solid and again square to the stock.
All in all this is a good quality tool and does exactly what you would expect.

Got 2 of these on the special offer. As usual, Rutlands excellent service prevailed and took delivery of the items following day of placing order. Nice gauges to use and have a comfortable weight to them. Only downside is the screw fixing the marking wheel to the shaft isn't countersunk as with the more expensive options however, as i don't indeed to use this as a depth gauge its no issue.
