Product Details

This is our best selling set of three Japanese saws and is favoured by professional cabinet makers, joiners and home woodworkers. Japanese handsaws have one stand out difference from their western counterparts; they cut on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke. Due to this single fundamental difference, Japanese saws have blades that are thinner, lighter and cut much smoother and faster. As the action of pulling the saw keeps the blade in tension through the cut, the blade does not need to be as thick or as heavy as a push saw which requires the extra bulk to withstand the compressive force of the cut keeping the blade, and the resultant cut, straight. This set consist of a Dozuki, Ryoba and Kataba saw.

The Dozuki saw has an ultra thin blade for fast, accurate sawing where an ultra fine finish is required when sawing dovetail joints, picture framing, moulding and beading.

The Ryoba is a double edge saw with two tooth patterns, one for cross cutting and the other for cutting with the grain on hard and softwoods. It features impulse harden teeth that are successively finer from tip to tang for easy starting cuts.

The Kataba saw has a slightly thicker blade without a spine making it ideal for long and deep cuts. The perfect combination of fine, flexible blade and large cut depth make it an extremely versatile saw, capable of cutting hard and softwood and composite materials leaving a clean feather free finish to the cut surfaces.

The design of the Japanese saws or "Noko Giri" differs greatly from the more familiar western style saws. The Japanese put great emphasis on balance in all areas of their life and their woodworking tools are no exception. Look at the shape and form of a Japanese saw and the handle is in perfect visual balance with the blade. Hold the same saw in your hand and you realise that the balance of the tool is not purely cosmetic. This makes the tool easier and more efficient to use and has a profound effect on your work.

My favourite is the Dozuki saw. I am a second fix joiner and I spend considerable time fitting window beading and picture rails. The finish cut is so clean you can't see the joint. I use the Ryoba mainly on wardrobe & kitchen cupboard frames. Out of 10 without doubt 11.

If you want the finest hand saws in the world to produce the finest joints then buy this set. Simply awesome!

Having used western style hand saws for over 20 years I was slightly sceptical about the benefits of Japanese saws. All I can say is I wish I had been told about them 20 years ago. They are in a different league to any saw I have used. The blades are really thin which means you are removing less wood and therefore have to exert less force. The action of cutting on the pull stroke keeps the blade perfectly straight and the teeth are individually set to act like a series of planes, shaving the wood away. Brilliant and I will never go back to a conventional saw.

My first japanese set and WOW scary sharp and a clean easy cut . So much more control in the action with minimal effort . Got this set of 3 for under £70 , bargain . Great job again Rutlands another purchase without hickup and swift delivery .

As a cabinet maker these saws have become priceless to me. Whether you are cutting hardwoods or veneered boards, these will leave you wondering "how did i ever got on without them".

Derek

Simply stunning!! Having used the "cheaper" Z saw and Irwin versions of Japanese saws for some time, I was convinced it was time to step up to a better quality tool. I now have a "rough set" of Z saws for the site work, and these beauties that will probably never leave the workshop, and be shiny forever :-). Hard to believe I could get 3 saws, from what is arguably the worlds most popular maker (and rightly so IMHO) for £13 more than 1 saw on another website, and cheaper delivery, and proper next day delivery!! not 3 days as elsewhere on the web. Well done to Rutlands for making these available at exceptional value, and I suggest if you buy these, you will not be even slightly dissapointed. Outstanding pieces of kit

I needed to cut 2 inch thick oak accurately and because of the needs of the job it could not be done on my table saw. I bought the Japanese saw guide to assist me and this set of saws because at least one, the Kataba, could be used with the saw guide.

I was very impressed with the results. The saw guide was a big help and the Kataba saw was a joy to work with. The cut was fine, smooth and accurate.

I have used the other saws as well and they are great to use, particularly if you are doing precision work on larger pieces of wood.

I am doing more small tenons by hand of late and I think I might buy the compact set for that extra degree of precision.

I have only just starting using Rutlands but I did find their service impressive - next day really does mean next day.

Nice piece of kit first time I have done a crosscut in a wide board and got it straight !! And with no tear out

I have never got on well with traditional handsaws,so these were bought as a last resort for large scale work that could not be done with power tools. What a revelation, they are now my first choice for both speed and accuracy on most projects.

Brilliant set of saws never used japanese saws before but now I have I always will they give a clean crisp cut every time absolutely bargain set of saws

Allan

I do not know the name of which one is which.

my favourite is the two edged one. It sings when I get it out and can be used on very small jobs with ease.

It is unbelievably sharp, and cuts fingers right off easily

Peter Walker

I've never used any other japanese or pull saws before but I have to say, these are stunningly impressive.

Slightly offputting when you first receive them as they are somewhat larger than you would imagine from looking at the pictures and you might mistake them for a set of murder weapons! The other disconcerting things is that the blades are rather thin and you may find that they don't appear to be perfectly straight.

These concerns disappear as soon as you use them though: they cut with ease through wood and leave a beautifully clean cut, even in my amateur hands. Regarding the blades not being straight, this is a function of them being thin and being designed to cut on the pull stroke; under the light tension of a gentle pull stroke they cut in a straight line.

Would recommend highly.

This Is A Good All-round Set Of Saws. The Ultra Hard Kataba Makes Light Work Of Mdf. Would Deffinately Recommend.

Peter Hadley

had never used a pull saw before I used these. once you get the hang of them, they're absolutely smashing. the cut is better than anything I've ever used. thank you rutlands.

Tom Grainger

i've used japanese tools for s few years now and must say these are the best saws i've owned. i'm now trying to resist the temptation of some of the other tools.

R Kennedy

Never used a pull saw before so these took a little bit of getting used to but even in my inexperienced hands the result was still impressive. The saws are so sharp and seem to glide through whatever I'm cutting whether its delicate moulding or thick boards.

Richard Mckinlay

I ordered a set of these saws on the 18th of December and they arrived in Cork in the south of Ireland on the 21st. Great service again. Having used Japanese saws before I had no hesitation ordering this set, which were on offer with a free carrying case.
The saws are good quality and can handle all the different timber products that I can throw at them.
Highly recommended to the serious woodworker or the occasional user.
Good product and great service.

Steve Heptinstall

These arrived well packed and in very short timescale. Very easy to use. I am actually looking forward to my next doevetail project due to the clean precise cuts. Materials and workmanship of the tools ate very good.

First impresdions lead me to think I may invest in some Premium grade Japanese pull saws now I have tried them. Impressed.
