Product Details

A perfect choice for the fine furniture and cabinet maker, this set of four Japanese saws include a dozuki saw with rip cut tooth pattern, a super hard kataba for fine cutting abrasive material, a fine tooth kataba for cutting exotic and hardwoods and a ryoba for fine, deep cutting in all woods.

The overall design of the Japanese saws or "Noko Giri" differs greatly from the more familiar western style saws. The Japanese put great emphasis on balance in all areas of their life and their woodworking tools are no exception. Look at the shape and form of a Japanese saw and the handle is in perfect visual balance with the blade. Hold the same saw in your hand and you realise that the balance of the tool is not purely cosmetic. This makes the tool easier and more efficient to use and has a profound effect on your work.

Japanese handsaws have one stand out difference from their western counterparts; they cut on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke. Due to this single fundamental difference, Japanese saws have blades that are thinner, lighter and cut much smoother and faster. As the action of pulling the saw keeps the blade in tension through the cut, the blade does not need to be as thick or as heavy as a push saw which requires the extra bulk to withstand the compressive force of the cut keeping the blade, and the resultant cut, straight.

Just starting out in woodworking and had heard good things about Japanese saws. Did a fair amount of research but then bought these speculatively. Absolutely love them. They are very sharp, very light and once you get used to the technique far easier to use than their Western counterparts. I actually enjoy cutting wood now as it is so easy. They leave a very fine kerf and an ultra smooth edge. If I have any concern, it is about the durability of the handles. But so far no issues whatsoever.

Recommended these by a friend and they are excellent. Just made four cuts across a piece of seasoned oak, 2400 mm x 600 mm. Not quite perfect due to lack of skill/practice on my part but much better and easier than with a standard saw.

Got these for a friend for Christmas and he is thrilled with them. So am I as they were on an excellent offer in your Winter Sale, bonus!

fantastic saws, the dozuki produces the finest cut I have seen from a saw, ever! brilliant, brilliant brilliant!

Great saws. Particularly like the katabas. Had a few issues getting used to the pull cutting and kept trying to push cut but I'm used to it now.

Martin Hill

Long been a fan of Japanese tools and these saws are superb, definitely the best I've used. I'm now deciding on a new set of Japanese chisels.
