Product Details

The kataba is an ideal choice of saw when you need a saw that offers a fine, accurate cut but without the depth of cut restrictions that the dozuki has. As the blade is slightly thicker than that of the dozuki, it does not need the supporting spine to keep it from buckling in use and can therefore cut much deeper than the dozuki. The blade tapers from the front getting narrower towards the back to reduce friction when cutting and also to prevent the blade from binding in the wood.

Cutting on the pull stroke the saw blade is kept under tension during cutting which results in a straighter, more accurate cut than would be achieved with a saw that cuts on the push stroke. As the pull stroke puts the blade under tension automatically, the blade can be much thinner than that of a push cutting saw resulting in a finer cut.

The teeth on the blade are individually hardened, sharpened and set. The special hardening process makes the edges of each tooth exceptionally hard while leaving the centre of the tooth softer and tougher. This softer core is like a shock absorber and prevents the tooth from shearing off if it strikes a knot or dense area of wood by absorbing the energy from the impact. This saw has a universal tooth pattern meaning is well suited to cutting both along and across the grain making it ideal for cutting dovetails, tenons and making other cuts at angles to the grain. The saw handle is made from Japanese magnolia wood and wrapped with rattan to give a secure and comfortable grip. This hand made kataba will revolutionise the way you hand cut joints and dovetails and is a sheer pleasure to use. Made in Japan.

This collection of Japanese handsaws are, quite simply, some of the finest saws you could ever possibly own. Crafted from the very finest materials, these saws are hand made by a highly respected Japanese master saw maker who has spent years learning and honing his skills. What makes these saws superior to machine made saws is their performance and this is all due to design features incorporated in to the saw during manufacture. Look closely at the saw blade and you will see that it tapers from the front to the back. As the front is thicker than the back, there is little chance of the saw binding in the wood during cutting.

Each tooth is individually hardened at the edges only allowing the softer inner core of the tooth to remain soft and allowing the tooth to withstand the shock of hitting a knot or dense area of wood without breaking off. The blades are hand hammered along their entire length relieving stress and making the blade perfectly straight. All of these factors combine to produce a saw that is exceptionally sharp and stays sharp and will give an ultra fine cut with glass smooth cut surfaces irrespective of the wood being cut.
