Product Details

Ideal for very large cutting tasks in abrasive materials such as MDF and exotic hardwoods as well as for cutting all types of softwood and hardwood, this kataba saw has an extra hard saw blade and highly durable teeth. The teeth stay sharper for much longer and are not dulled easily even when cutting particle board and laminates. The triple bevel edged crosscut teeth leave a smooth finish to the cut. The blade is mounted in a traditional style rattan wrapped wooden handle. Kataba saws have slightly thicker blades than the dozuki saws making them stronger. This extra strength means the blade does not require the reinforcing spine that the dozuki saws do giving the kataba saws unrestricted cutting depth. The kataba has the perfect combination of fine, flexible blade and large cut depth making it an extremely versatile saw. These saws are capable of cutting solid hardwood and softwood, plywood and composite materials and will leave a clean finish to the cut surfaces. Due to the design of the saw, the kataba is the saw of choice for making deep or long cuts and can also be used for flush cutting and trimming. The Japanese put great empahsis on balance in all areas of their life and their woodworking tools are no exception. Look at the shape and form of a Japanese saw and the handle is in perfect visual balance with the blade. Hold the same saw in your hand and you realise that the balance of the tool is not purely cosmetic. This makes the tool easier and more efficient to use and has a profound effect on your work. Japanese handsaws have one stand out difference from their western counterparts; they cut on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke. Due to this single fundamental difference, Japanese saws have blades that are thinner, lighter and cut much smoother and faster. As the action of pulling the saw keeps the blade in tension through the cut, the blade does not need to be as thick or as heavy as a push saw which requires the extra bulk to withstand the compressive force of the cut keeping the blade, and the resultant cut, straight.

I was recommend this saw by a fellow woodworker who makes boxes out of exotic hardwood. I am making a chest of drawers out of reclaimed oak and all of the joints are hand cut. The teeth are super sharp and make for controlled sawing. To date and I hope I don't tempt fate no damage to any teeth.

This is my first experience with a Japanese style saw. It takes a while getting used to, but once you've used it for a while it's pretty amazing - not quite a knife through butter, but close. It feels great in the hand, and very responsive. No more western style for me - I'm a convert!
