Product Details

This set of combination stones offers you five different grits across three stones from the coarse 250 grit for re-grinding and shaping blades to the ultra fine 6000 grit for honing and final polishing. All of the stones are made up from a blend of aluminium oxide, carbide and nitride suspended in a soft bonding compound. By using a blend of different abrasive particles rather than just one, these stones are better equipped to sharpen very hard steels such as white paper steel and Japanese high speed steel. The softness of the bonding compound means the particles are released very easily and this makes the sharpening process much faster. All stones need soaking in water before use and should be kept wet during use.

This set comprises of a 250/1000 grit stone that measures 205mm x 50mm x 25mm, 800/4000 grit stone that measures 185mm x 63mm x 25mm and 1000/6000 grit stone which measures 207mm x 66mm x 36mm. Made in Japan.

Unlike other synthetic sharpening stones which consist of a single abrading agent, these Japanese water stones consist of aluminium oxide, carbide and nitride particles fused together. This blend is then mixed with a clay like bonder and baked at high temperatures to form the sharpening stone. The resultant stone is soft but sharpens very quickly. The soft bonding clay allows the abrasive particles to release very easily when the stone is soaked in water. This gives the user a constant supply of fresh cutting surfaces with which to grind, sharpen and hone their tools.

Man has been sharpening edge tools with stones for thousands of years. Until very recently, the stones used were mined or quarried in specific parts of the world where the local stone exhibited all the necessary qualities required of a good sharpening stone, including and most importantly a consistent grit size. With the introduction of new technologies, it was possible to create synthetic sharpening stones with specific grit sizes using a mixture of abrasive compounds suspended in a soft bonding material. As the supply of the premium quality natural stone has become depleted and almost exhausted, man made sharpening stones have have become more popular.

Now favoured by many over the natural stones, when you purchase a synthetic Japanese sharpening stone you are guaranteed a stone with a uniform grit size that will produce consistent, high quality results when sharpening and will not vary in quality from stone to stone. ©

Great product, first time that I have used waterstone for sharpening woodwork tooling. Overall very happy with my first attempt.

I had been using the 'scary sharp' method to hone my tools for several years and felt that I was achieving good results - but this set of sharpening stones produce a sharp polished surface faster.

The only drawback is the softness of the material which requires flattening after a few uses - but the edges they produce are very good. I highly recommend this product!

Great set! I truly recommend this.
Thanks Rutlands for the quick delivery in Belgium.
The stones work like a charm. After watching a video by Mino Tsuchida on how to sharpen a knife, I had a go, without using any jigs, and was so amazed at the results.
The different grits offered are quite enough and I agree with the other review you'll end-up using the 1000 grit often. I suppose now I need a proper lapping plate...

Set of three stones is excellent value and covers the full range of grits - I did think originally that two stones with 1000 grit faces was a tad pointless but I seem to use 1000 grit more than any of the others so it is actually a bonus. I thought my Tormek could get my tools sharp but sharpening them by hand with these stones makes them unbelievably sharp.
