Product Details

Small and very perfectly formed by a master craftsman, this knife is just the right size for carving and whittling as well as performing other cutting jobs. An excellent companion around the home and garden, this knife will soon become your right hand man and the first knife you reach for when something needs doing. The beautiful Damascus steel blade has a core and cutting edge of white paper steel. White paper steel is a very pure carbon steel made from the very finest iron ore and carbon with nothing else added to it. This steel will harden to a far higher degree than most other steels and will hone to an ultra fine, razor sharp edge. Being very hard, this is a steel that will not blunt easily but may chip or crack if abused or impacted which is why layers of a softer iron are forge welded to either side of the blade. These iron layers act like shock absorbers giving protection to the white paper steel. The blade is hand forged by Saji and then hand finished, honed and etched with his signature. A tang, forged as part of the blade to give the knife strength, sits deeply in the handle making the handle and blade feel like a single, solid piece. The hardwood handle is gently rounded and contoured to fit comfortably in the palm of the hand and a hanging loop is threaded through the handle. This knife is supplied with a polished, wooden sheath which offers protection to the blade when not in use. This is an excellent small knife and ideal for craft work and for use around the home. Made in Japan. Saji is a name synonymous with the very best knives Japan has to offer. A highly regarded craftsman, Takeshi Saji has been honoured by his native Japan many times and has even been declared a national treasure for the unparalleled quality of his work. Born in 1948 in to a blacksmithing family, Saji was apprenticed to a master knife maker at the age of 14. From the very beginning of his apprenticeship it was obvious that Saji had a natural talent for his craft. Originating and still living in Takefu, Saji is at the very heart of traditional and cultural centre of Japan's hammer forged knife industry. Takefu itself has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its blades. Its knife manufacturing history dates back over 700 years and is in an area famed for its exceptionally pure quality iron ore. Each knife Saji produces is a work of art that is made to be used. The sheer quality of his knives will ensure they last and continue to work hard for their owner for years to come. Beautiful heirloom quality knives.
