Product Details

This is an exceptional woodturning lathe package. The lathe is the established market leader in North America and the chuck features the latest advancement in work holding systems. Compared to many other bench top lathes it has greater work holding capacity allowing for 305mm bowl turning and 457mm spindle turning and has the advantage that you can extend the bed at a later stage to increase spindle turning to over 1000mm. Supplied with a premium quality set of turning tools this package is the perfect purchase for a new woodturner or an experienced one looking to take their work to a new level.

The lathe is powered by a high torque, induction motor which is extremely quiet in use, even at maximum speed and under full load. A non-slip poly V belt efficiently transmits power from the motor whilst the motor controller automatically increases the level of torque to maintain the speed, as load on the workpiece is increased. The drive belt is moved to one of the three steps on the pulley and then the variable speed control knob is rotated, to dial in to a precise speed (450 to 1100rpm, 960 to 2400rpm or 1400 to 3500rpm).

The digital read out is ideally positioned on the top of the headstock to offer perfect visibility. The level of vibration is remarkably low, due to the substantial grey iron castings which have the mass needed to dampen and absorb vibration. The cast iron headstock is CNC machined for the precise alignment of the drive spindle and steel roller bearings, ensuring class leading concentricity. The drive spindle has a 1" x 8tpi thread with a no 2 morse taper to allow for the fitting of industry standard chucks and attachments. The tailstock has no 2 morse taper which is hollowed out to 10mm diameter to allow for the drilling of spindles for accepting electric cable when making standard and bed side lamps.

The extra long 200mm tool rest reduces the need for frequent repositioning and is held firmly in the non-slip banjo with a 25.4mm diameter stem. All of the adjustment handles are ergonomic and can be locked off to prevent obstruction with the turning tool. The lathe comes complete with a tool holder, revolving centre, four prong centre, 70mm face plate, spindle locking wrenches and a set of extra long bolts to fit the lathe to the premium lathe stand. This lathe is ideal for bowl and platter turning, goblet, vase and egg cup turning, pen turning and all between centres work.

Measuring 70mm in diameter, the compact design of the chuck ensures that the workpiece sits as close as possible to the headstock therefore reducing load on the main headstock bearing and minimising vibration when turning. The chucks are specifically designed so the jaws will cut into the wood to provide high tear-out strength, unlike some other woodturning chucks that use engineering jaw profiles which crush the wood fibres and do not securely grip the workpiece.

Engineered from medium tensile steel, this chuck is strong and durable and features a precision machined scroll mechanism and high ratio gearing for a strong grip irrespective of work piece size. The jaws open and close using a T-handled key, allowing for one handed operation, leaving one hand free to support and balance your workpiece. The chuck comes with standard dovetail jaws and a woodscrew allowing for pen turning, spindle turning, bowl turning, goblets and candlesticks and much more.

The turning tool set contains six tool profiles that allow the turner to carry out both spindle and bowl turning projects from the initial roughing out process to the final finish. So whether you plan to turn pens, candlesticks, goblets, fruit bowls or platters this set will cover all your needs. The HSS blades have extra long tangs that bury their way deep into the ash handles for a secure rigid hold between handle and blade. This reduces the risk of tool vibration and minimises chatter. The grade of high speed steel combined with accurate forming allows for a keen edge which is easily maintained. The full-bodied ash handles are contoured for superior comfort and offer an overall tool which is well balanced and easy to control.

Presented in a wooden case, this six-piece set comprises: 9.5mm (3/8") bowl gouge, 19mm (3/4") roughing gouge, 28mm (1 1/8") oval skew chisel, 19mm (3/4") round nose scraper, 22mm (7/8") diamond section parting tool and 9.5mm (3/8") spindle gouge. Handle lengths are in three sizes 250mm, 300mm and 350mm and the overall tool lengths vary from 550mm for the bowl gouges down to 400mm for the spindle gouge.

John Bilson

An absolute gem of a lathe. It runs extremely quietly and there is simply no vibration through the castings. It is in a different league to my old Tyme Cub lathe. Turned a bowl form a Bubinga blank that was way out of true and the lathe did not stall or slow when initially roughing out. It seemed to relish the challenge. Highly impressed.

This lathe lives up to its specification. I have used a number of brands of lathe in my tutors workshop ( he has 9 different lathes) and I can honestly say that this is the smoothest running lathe I have come across. You don't even need to mount it down, it seems to have no vibration. Without and adjustments the headstock and tailstock lined up perfectly. It's great - what more can I say. Rutlands should make a video of it to show how smooth it is.

I was impressed from the moment I started to unbox this lathe. It was extremely well packed in a polystyrene mould, there were no chips or damage to the paint surface and all I had to do was plug and go. I have had two other lathes in the past and neither compare to this. It is remarkably quiet and simply purrs when you turn the speed dial. I balanced a penny coin on the headstock, that's how smooth it is. It is in a different class to any other lathe I have owned. It looks very similar to the Rikon lathe sold in America. I have turned a couple of bowls out of Bubinga and I am delighted with the finish. It really is an excellent lathe.

As a newbie woodturner on a tight budget, I decided on this set of tools. I know there are better ones available, but they are much more expensive, so I'm sure these will do. They will need a good sharpen, but I hope when that's done, I will be able to produce some great items.

I have only recently returned to turning after an absence of nearly 30 years. My last set of turning chisels where Marples brand. This set is just as good, if not better. Very please with these, some needed a hone, but great to turn with. Highly recommend them!

I am delighted with my chuck, it certainly suits my purpose. I am new to wood turning and showed the chuck to one of my Men Shed colleagues and he said it could sell for a lot more than I payed for it. Delivery was very quick and I will certainly recommend this product. Will get some extra jaws in the near future.

Ordered before 11 and arrived at dinner next day the chuck has a very solid feel to it and its well engineered the movement is precise and the jaws clamp excellent there is no unbalanced feel when turning on the lathe this is an excellent investment

Steve Cureton

This is a great piece of kit and a great price. I am new to woodturning but I ordered on the advise of a more experienced lathe user. It arrived within a couple of days of placing the order and was a simple fit. It looks to be nicely made and I think it will suit my purposes very well.

We bought 8 of these chucks for our school so that we do not have to remove and remount work at the end of each class. We have been delighted with the quality.

So far I have turned a candlestick and a bowl using my new chuck. I found it very simple to set up. I used a 40mm square blank for the candle stick which was gripped in the main jaws. As the candle stick was only 200mm long it did not need support at the tailstock end. For the bowl I used a 200mm Bubinga blank which was 60mm deep. After turning the recess in the rear of the blank the main jaws gripped the blank by expanding into the recess. It was a bit nervous at first when knocking the corners off but once removed the going was very smooth. I would not say they are master pieces but for a first attempt I am proud. there are a number of good videos you can watch about setting up your timber in chucks that take the mystique out of it. Great product that I would definitely buy again.

I have just purchased this chuck and tried it out yesterday. I have one word only - Brilliant! Highly recommend this product as it just performs perfectly. And I might add, the usual first class service from Rutlands with a fast delivery to the door.

Mick Beckett

I bought this chuck absolutley fantastic I have only had it for 24hours I have turned 2 bowls a minature table & a goblet I have not turned as much before. It is because I feel the wood is secure in the chuck jaws & this makes me more relaxed so I do more. Mick

Peter Potts

Excellent chuck had it couple of months now and it works perfectly, highly recommended to anyone.

Steve Smith

WOW, WOW, WOW. This chuck is brilliant, well balanced and very smooth when running. I purchased this rather than the Record Power Nova G3 and I'm so pleased. I am very new to turning and found it very easy to use. I would highly recommend this to everyone! But get it soon before they run out and at an excellent price too!

Chris Williams

I've been searching ages for an affordable lathe chuck and recently I bought this one. Put simply, it's superb, build quality is excellent and the added extras you get are a real bonus. So if you want a well engineered chuck at a very reasonable price, this is the one.

Jimmy

This is an amazing piece of equipment. I find that I can do over 90% of my turning work using this Dakota chuck. It also takes those home made bowl and work piece holders that we put together to save a few quid.It truly has bocome my best mate in my workshop (shed). Thank you Rutlands for stocking this nugget.

Michael Cantral

A really superb chuck. It does everything claimed for it and more. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and really put it through its paces - it achieves everything I ask of it. Over the years I've used most types of chuck but this one really is the tops.

John

I can highly recommend this chuck. It is very well engineered, extremely precise and accurate. Excellent for bowl and goblet turning.

Dave Cross

I have just upgraded from a Record collet chuck that i found very clumsy to operate. This is in a different league, you simply insert the allen key, rotate and the jaws glide in to position. I've just turned an 8' bowl from square stock and the chuck didn't even flinch.
