The most accurate way of placing screws or drilling holes is to start with a pilot hole. This positively locates the screw or drill bit right where it's needed before you start to drill or screw and keeps it in place while you do so. This is where an awl comes in useful. Its sharp point allows you to create the pilot hole precisely where you want it.

Our precision awl is the best awl we have ever tried. Hardened to Rc 59-61, the high speed steel blade features a sharp point for accurate hole placement in both hardwoods and softwoods. As the blade is hardened high speed steel rather than carbon steel, the point is much sharper, will stay sharper for longer and will not bend or wear down. Its extremely smooth finish prevents it from sticking especially when used in wet or green wood. Turned from solid Bubinga, the handle is ergonomically shaped to give you a firm yet comfortable grip making it a pleasure to use. Very expensive, but a fantastic awl. Very sharp point, enters materials (wood and plastics) easily and makes a good indentation for subsequent hole drilling. Fits the hand well.

Very nice sharp point, comes with a rubber protection tip thingy so must be pointy!
The picture makes it look bigger than it is. The whole thing is slightly bigger than my hand, it's good quality though.
