Bench Morticer with Sliding Table

Rutlands    Part No. DK2096

• Smooth longitudinal and lateral table movement for fast precise morticing
• 100mm lateral (side to side) movement : 40mm longitudinal (front to back) movement
• Ultra quiet high torque induction motor
• Solid grey iron casting headstock and table
• Smooth running precision dovetail slides
• Designed for 3/4" shank mortice chisels
• Max. workpiece size 110mm high by 120mm wide

This is the UK's No 1 bench top morticing machine. The workpiece table has both 100mm lateral (side to side) and 40mm longitudinal (front to back) movement operated by two independent handles. This dual action movement allows you to smoothly and accurately align the workpiece under the chisel and bit for pin point morticing.

Made from grey iron castings the headstock and table run on dovetail slides. These dovetail slides have adjustment bolts that allow you to eliminate any play that may occur from heavy or prolonged use, resulting in a machine that will maintain its accuracy for life. Powered by a 0.5hp high torque, quiet running induction motor you can mortice up to 13mm in hardwoods and 16mm in softwoods. A gas strut counterbalances the weight of the headstock ensuring a controlled and smooth movement of the chisel into the workpiece. A front tapered clamp grips the timber firmly in position and prevents the workpiece from rising off the table when removing the chisel from the workpiece. For repetitive morticing horizontal and vertical stops are provided. The maximum workpiece size is 110mm high by 120mm wide.

This power house of a morticer, weighs in at 43kg and is supplied in two boxes for ease of transportation and fast assembly. Designed for 3/4" shank chisels it comes complete with service tools. Highly recommended.

* Please note: the chisel and bit is not included

Easy to assemble, sturdy and well made for the money. Initially there was a bit of side play in the table but that was easily fixed using the adjustment bolts. The only issue I had was the drill chuck sliding of the tapered motor spindle on occasions when doing a full 50mm depth mortice. But this can be avoided by doing the mortice in stages. On the whole an ideal machine for DIY and very pleased with my purchase.

Excellent bench top machine , easily assembled on receipt and accurate once set up. A great addition to small workshop, and at the offer price well worth it. Saves so much time - just morticed sixteen window shutter frames each with four mortices , with no problem.

Firstly, I should explain I am not an expert, just a hobbyist, my previous experience of mortise equipment is limited to adapted drill press types. This machine by comparison is superb. Solid, easy to set up and use, and produces clean accurate cuts. It is nice & quiet, and seems sufficiently powerful, though I haven't used a chisel > 12 mm as yet. If I was being super critical, I would say that the lateral movement lever/handle can foul the in & out adjustment knob, and the depth and width travel limit locks have over-long screws, but that's just nit picking. Next day delivery was excellent, it came in 2 boxes, about 20 kg each. The assembly instructions were easy to follow, and all the tools required for assembly were provided. The price seems to fluctuate a lot, this was £180, an offer I couldn't refuse. Other suppliers seem to be in the £270 - £300 range, more than I could justify as a hobbyist. An excellent tool, particularly for the price.

I was really impressed with the build quality and I have been after one of these for a number of years but the cost of them was a bit prohibitive. With the deal that Rutlands had, I could not resist any longer. Great bit of kit it puts square holes in any timber I stock ( Oak, Elm, Sycamore just to mention a few ) very easily and with having a moving bed it makes it so much easier and more accurate than using a drilling machine attachment and a lot faster too. Its easy to assemble when delivered and easy to set up to do the job in hand, square holes. Also having the riser block as well, makes it a dream to use on the bigger jobs. Well done Rutlands

This was my first morticer. It is very solidly built and the sliding table slides smoothly and controllably in both dimensions. I have tested it on a deep through mortice in sapele and found it performed excellently.

Been after one of these with the sliding table for months , but which one? Took advantage of Rutlands offer price and bought this . Firstly it was easy to put together, didn't need the instructions.I think I was lucky the sliding tables did not need adjusting action was very smooth. With my old morticer it was a fight to get the chisel in then a fight to get it back out, every thing is much easier as the machine clamps the wood nice and tight. I have no qualms whatsoever about recommending this machine

First impressions are a good piece of kit. Looks solid and should take what I will need to throw at it. Assembly instructions not that hot but only took me a couple of minutes to work it out for myself anyway (and I would assume that anyone using machinery such as this would not have a problem). At the price would certainly recommend it.

Ordered on Monday and received on Tuesday, so full marks to Rutlands for service! The morticer is a littel fiddly to set up (especially attaching the motor to the sliding carriage on the column) and there was some transit damage to the motor itself, but overall this is a fair machine for the money. The clamp is strong and the stops work well. Motor is quiet. I would have liked something on the main lever to stop it sliding about, but I can sort that out myself. The machine has fairly low power and it does flex when using the 16mm mortice chisel and bit. But it is a small benchtop machine and one shouldn't expect too much. It will do 16mm mrtices in 95mm softwood (with some effort), which is the reason I bought it. A more powerful machine would cost a lot more and take up a lot more space, so I am happy enough.

This is a robust piece of kit. Easy to assemble - instructions, though brief, were sufficient. Cuts a very accurate and clean mortice. The lateral movement is firm and positive, likewise proximal/distal movement. Just one slight niggle, if the material is wide, the control knob of the proximal/distal movemenyt may obstruct the control lever of the lateral movement. Although there are alternative sockets for the lever rod, unless the machine is positioned very close to the front of its supporting table, these alternatives allow for limited movement. But this is a small matter in light of the generally excellent build of the machine.Overall, a very useful addition to a workshop.

Morticer arrived safely here in Ireland, very easy to assemble and the motor runs extremely quietly. Installed the morticer on a unit I built with two bolts either side of the base. The only thing I would change the handle for a wheel that moves the base side to side. For the money it's an excellent buy and fully recommended.

I purchased one of these mortice machine and had free 24 hr delivery though this fell over the bank holiday. The machine I have found excellent and good value, I have been looking for a machine that had sliding bed in both directions and I have now found one. Chippy

Great piece of kit for the price. The clamp actually works and keeps the workpiece firmly held when the chisel is withdrawn. You will need to buy the extension piece too if you want to construct doors.

Arrived on time when unpacked there was damage contacted Rutlands and they said it did not affect the working and it often comes damaged. This attitude spoils what is a good machine

I have read reviews on this mortiser and I can't for life of me understand how it has earned 5 stars. The first thing I found was the fence out of square with the base. Next I found after tightening the mortise drill in the chuck i found i could not fully incert the outer part of the cutter. Lastly I don't have any problem moving the table left to right But I cannot understand how to get it to move forward and backwards by using the knob,I can only move it if I shove or push it whilst turning the knob.

Assembly was very easy no instructions necessary. Generally the machine quality for the money seems to be good. As expected the slide ways needed some adjustment, in fact I removed the cross slide assembly completely and found a Gib strip that was just a piece of un machined cast iron but filed and lapped it on a diamond block re assembled & adjusted, now works fine. Motor is very quiet. The chuck runs true and the ground table & backrest are square to each other, the table is perfectly square in both directions to the vertical travel of the chisel. A design criticism of the machine is the longitudinal table lever when it is moved left & right it can clash with the cross slide knob and the lever has to be re positioned. This would have been easy to correct during manufacture by simply extending the longitudinal lever shaft 2 inches. My conclusion is after the adjustments I had to make and for the £161.42 I paid including a riser block it will suit my requirements, however I would not pay more for this machine unless it was better engineered.

An excellent price at £189.95 bench morticer didn't need one as yet but at this price i couldn't resist and I'm shore I'll put it to could use and as others have have point out no assembly instructions but it only a hand full of bolts and washers just follow the picture the motor is nice runner excellent

The assembly instructions are not that good however set up is very simple and took me less than 20 minutes. The only tweak I had to make was to adjust the screws on the gib strip because the lateral movement was quite stiff when first out of the box. Really impressed with how quiet the motor runs.

Rutlands advised me that this morticer could mortice up to 1/2" in oak. I was slightly dubious however I purchased it on the basis that I would return it if it failed on the oak. I should have more faith - it worked perfectly. Just make sure that the window in the chisel that extracts the shavings is facing toward the hole you have just cut. This way the chisel does not get clogged up. Highly recommended.

I recently invested in this morticer for making the framework for my new kitchen units. I am absolutely delighted with it. The ability to move the chisel back and forth with the hand wheel makes setting up simple and precise. I estimate it has saved me two or three days in man hours compared to hand morticing. Brilliant.
